SURVEY OF LAND IN WICH MALBANCK 1641
[PART I]
A book of survey of the lands of Richard Wilbraham, knight and baronet, lying
within the Town of Wich Malbanke. Which survey was made and presented by the
Jurye in the Court of his manor theare called the Abbott's Fee holden the 19th
day of May anno domm 1641. And delivd as our vardon unto Georg Henshall Steward
of the said Court.

HOSPELL STREET
[1] Roger Combarbach howldeth of the sayd Sir Richard Wilbraham, by Lease,[note
a. in right margin] one howse and gardayne, to witt in breadth betweene the
lands of Thomas Combarbach upon the Est part.
(wher wee the Jury doe find that within the lands of the sayd Thomas Combarbach
ther is soe much of the howse the sayd Sir Richard Wilbraham his lands as is
contayned betwixt these[?] the outmost Ashler at the westend of Sir Richards
howse in the howlding of Roger Combarbach as doth extend into the sayd ........
dwelling howse on the street from ... 4inches .... the bacster .....? . And all
soe wee doe finde Sir Richard his land to extend from the outmost Ashler on the
back side of the sayd Thomas his dwelling howse, unto the end of the sayd
Thomas' outmost building, and from the outmost ashler of that building wee doe
finde Thomas Combarbach his land to extend in breadth unto Sir Richard 5 feete
being from the sayd ashler of the sayd dwelling howse 28 feete and from hence
divided with an hedge of the sayd Thomas all alonge of one the Est side of Sir
Richards lands demised to the sayd Roger Combarbach )
And the lands of the sayd Sir Richard now in the tenure of Hugo Tench uppon the
West part, And the lands of John Wettenhall commonly called the Tinkers Croft
upon the North part, and the Hospell Street upon the South part and payeth
yearly Rent 20 shillings

[2] Hugh Tench howldeth of the sayd Sir Richard, as tenant at will, one howse
and garden, in breadth betwixt the lands of the sayd Sir Richard in the
houlding of Roger Combarbach upon the Est part, and the lands of the sayd Sir
Richard in the houlding of Margaret Leygh upon the West part, And in length
betwixt the lands of John Whettenhall called the Tinkers Croft upon the North
part, and the Hospell Street upon the South and payeth yearly Rent : 2
pounds.
[3] Margaret Leygh howldeth of the sayd of the sayd Sir Richard one howse and
garden by lease, in breadth betwixt the lands of the sayd Sir Richard, Est and
West, And in length betwixt the lands of Mr Whettenhall called Tinkers Croft
upon the North; and the Hospell Street upon the Southe and payeth yearly ----
Rent one pound.[note in right margin]: Lives Margaret Leygh, John sonne of Chas
Combarbach, Margaret daughter of Richard Wriwt. ----Heriot 20 shillings
[4] Robart Moyle houldeth of the sayd Sir Richard one howse and garden by
lease, in breadth betwixt the lands of the sayd Sir Richard Est and West, And
in length betwixt the lands of the sayd Mr Whettenhall upon the North; and the
Hospell Street upon the Southe and payeth yearly ---Rent one pound[note in
right margin]: Lives Robart Moyle and Anne his wife and Thomas Moyle, Butcher.
--- Heriot of 20 shillings. ----- Not to part with any of his estate except to
wife or children without the Lords consent.
[5] Elizabeth Hodmow Widdo howldeth of the sayd Sir Richard one howse and
garden by lease, in breadth betwixt the lands of the sayd Sir Richard one the
Est and West parts, and in bredth betwixt the lands of the sayd Mr Whettenhall
one the Northe and the Hospell Street upon the Southe and payeth yearly -----
Rent 10 shillings.[note in right margin]: a lease for 80 years from the 16 of
December the 7th of King Charles. If the sayd
[6] Edmond Harstnow houldeth of the sayd Sir Richard one howse and garden by
lease, in bredth betwixt the lands of the sayd Sir Richard one the Est partin
the houlding of Elizabeth Hodmow widdo and to the lands of John Chetwood
Esquire upon the West part and in length betwixt the lands of the sayd Mr
Wettenhall called Tinkers Croft upon the North part and the Hospell Street upon
the South part and payeth yearly ---Rent 8 shillings [note in right margin]: A
lease for 80 years from the 18th day of February in the 7th year of King
Charles if John sonne of Edmond Harstnow soe long live. ------ Heriot 8
shillings. ------ not to part with any of the estate without licence except to
a wife or children.
[7] The heares of Roger Manwaring howldeth of the sayd Sir Richard Wilbraham as
tenant at will, one garden betwixt the lands of John Chetwood Esquire, in the
severall houldings of Edward Oulton, Richard Hollcraft and Richard Batcnall
upon the Est part, and to the lands of the sayd Sir Richard in the houlding of
the sayd heares of Roger Manwaring upon the West part,And to a meaddow the
lands of the sayd John Chetwood Esq. upon the North part, and divided by a
cisterne or diche from the lands of the sayd heares of Roger Manwaring upon the
Southe and payeth yearly ---- Rent is payd with the following.
[8] The sayd heares of Roger Manwaring howldeth of the sayd Sir Richard one
other garden late being ..... as tenant at will,lying betwixt the lands of the
sayd Sir Richard in the houlding of the sayd heares upon the Est part, And to
the lands of the sayd Sir Richard in the houlding of Martha Manwaring widdo
upon the West part, And to the lands of John Chetwood Esq. on the North part,
And to the lands of the sayd Sir Richard in the severall houldings of Margery
Maddocke, Henry Madock, and Elizabeth Bucklay, And the suppossed land of Thomas
Mastersonne gent and payeth yearly. ---------- Rent 12 shillings.
[9] Margery Maddocke widdo howldeth of the sayd Sir Richard one house and
garden as tenant at will, lying in bredth betwixt the lands of the heares of
Roger Manwaring upon the Est part and the lands of the sayd Sir Richard upon
the West part, and in length to the lands of the sayd Sir Richard being the
gardens in the houlding of the heares of Roger Manwaring one the North part,
and to the Hospell Street upon the Southe part and paying yearly. ---------
Rent 6 shillings 8 pence.
[10] Henry Maddocke houldeth of the sayd Sir Richard one house and garden as
tenant at will, in bredth betwixt the lands of the sayd Sir Richard in the
houlding of Margery Madock upon the Est part, and the house is Bounded with a
house being the land of the sayd Sir Richard in the houlding of the sayd
Margery Maddocke And the garden is is bounded unto another garden being the
land of the sayd Sir Richard in the houlding of Roger (Elizabeth erased)
Bucklay (widdo erased) upon the West and to the land of the sayd Sir Richard
upon the North, and to the Hospell Street upon the Southe and payeth yearly.

[11] Margery Madocke widdow houldeth a cotage without a garden as tenant at
will and lyethe betwixt the lands of Sir Richard West and North and to the
Hospell Street Southe.[note : This howse is d.... ...... .... ]
[12] Roger Bucklay (Elizabeth widdo erased) houldeth of the sayd Sir Richard as
tenant at will, one howse and garden in bredth betwixt the lands of the sayd
Sir Richard upon the Est part, and the suppossed lands of Mr Thomas Mastersonne
upon the West part and in length betwixt the lands of the sayd Sir Richard upon
the Northe part and the Hospell Street upon the South and payeth yearly. ----
Rent 10 shillings.
[13] Mary Hoolford Widdo howldeth of the sayd Sir Richard by an assignement
from Owin Mekin Deceased, A lease of one howse and garden which is bounded in
lenght unto the Hospell Street upon the Southe part, And the lands of the sayd
Sir Richard upon the Northe part, And in bredth betwixt the lands of the heares
of William Manwaring upon the Est part, allsoe it lyeth unto the suppossed
lands of Mr Thomas Mastersonne upon the North part and payeth yearly

[14] Thomas Wright houldeth of the sayd Sir Richard as tenant at will, one
howse and garden, in bredth betwixt the suppossed lands of Mr Mastersonne upon
the Est part, And the lands of the sayd Sir Richard in the howlding of Robart
Parker upon the West part,And in lenght betwixt the lands of the sayd Sir
Richard upon the North part, and the Hospell Street upon the South part and
payeth yearly ---------------- Rent 10 shillings.
[15] Robart Parker howldeth of the sayd Sir Richard by lease one howse and
garden, in bredth unto the lands of the Sayd Sir Richard upon the Est and West
part, and in lenght betwixt the lands of the sayd Sir Richard upon the North
part, and the Hospell Street upon the South part and payeth yearly
---------------- Rent 10 shillings.[note right margin]: A lease for 80 years
from the tenth day of February in 20th year of King James, If the sayd Robart
Parker, Thomas sonne of Richard Parker soe long liv --------- Heriot 10
shillings.
[16] Martha Manwaring widdow howldeth of the sayd Sir Richard as tenant at
will, a parcell of ground being a paved passage way from the Hospell Street
which is upon the South part, and layding unto the garden or orchard being the
lands of the sayd Sir Richard in the houlding of the sayd Martha which is with
the hearafter meered[?] and bounded upon the North part, And in bredth betwixt
the lands of the Sayd Sir Richard in the houlding of Robart Parker upon the Est
part, And from that land it doth contayne in bredthe, Ten yards, Three quarters
and half a quarter, unto the lands of the heares of Will Manwaring now in the
houlding of the sayd Martha Manwaring upon the West part. Allsoe the sayd
Martha houldeth of the sayd Sir Richard as tenant at will, with the aforesayd
parcell of ground, one garden or orchard, which lyeth betwixt the lands of the
sayd Sir Richard, in the several howldings of Thomas Wright, Robart Parker and
the parcell of ground before expressed, upon the southe part, And to the lands
of the sayd Sir Richard, being gardens in the houlding of John Hussy, .......
Clarke and the sayd Martha Manwaring upon the Northe part, And to the suppossed
lands of Mr Mastersonne, upon the Est part, And to the land of the sayd heares
of Will Manwaring upon the West part and payeth yearly -------------- Rent 1
shilling 8 pence.
[17] The aforesayd Martha Manwaring houldeth of the sayd Sir Richard Wilbraham
as tenant at will one other garden lying in lenght to the lands of John
Chitwood Esq. one the North part and to the suppossed land of Mr Mastersone in
the houlding of Hector Bristou, upon the South part, and in bredth lying
betwixt the lands of the sayd Sir Richard, and the lands of Gefray Mynshall
Esq. on the West part, And to the lands of the Sayd Sir Richard on the Est part
and payeth yearly --- Rent 1 shilling 8 pence.
[18] Richard Venables houldeth of the sayd Sir Richard by lease one howse
wherin he dwelleth, lying unto the lands of the sayd Sir Richard in the
houlding of Allis Arrowsmyth widdow upon the West part, and to the lands of
Thomas Wilbraham of Namptwich Esq. upon the Est part, The Hospell Street upon
the South part, and the lands of Sir Thomas Smythe in the houlding of Will Barnes
upon the North part, And payeth yearly -------- Rent 10 shillings. {note right
margin] Lives Richard Venables and Elizabeth Venables, sonne and daughter to
Richard Venables the elder, deceased. Heriot 10 shillings.
[20] Allis Arrowsmyth widd. houldeth of the sayd Sir Richard Wilbraham one
howse and garden by lease, lying betwixt the lands of the sayd Sir Richard in
the houlding of Richard Venables upon the Est part, and the lands of William
Leay upon the West part, the Hospell Street upon the South part, and the lands
Sir Thomas Smyth upon the North and payeth yearly -------- Rent 6
shillings.[note, right margin]: A lease for 21 years from the 6th day of
September anno dom. 1637. Heriot 12 shillings.
[21] The heares of Edmond Myles deceased houldeth of the sayd Sir Richard by
lease one messuage, with the taverne, stables and yards called the Lambe house,
lying part to the lands of the heares of Ollin Parker deceased, and part to the
lands of the sayd Sir Richard in the houlding of Mr Alexander Walthall and Will
Barnes upon the Est part, And part to the lands of the sayd Sir Richard in the
houlding of Margaret Latham, And part to the lands of Mr Walthall in the
houlding of Margaret Pratchet widdow, upon the West, And to Church Yard upon
the North, And the Hospell Street upon the South part and payeth yearly
------------ Rent 2 pounds 10 shillings.[note in margin]: A lease mnade the
20th day of August in the 16th year of King Charles for 80 years if Elizabeth
Myles and Katharine daughter of Edmond and Roger Cardif sonne of Ro.... Cardif
soe long liveth. Heriot one pound.
[22] Margaret Latham widdow houldeth of the sayd Sir Richard by lease one
messuage, lying Est, West and North unto the lands of the sayd Sir Richard, And
to the Hospell Street upon the South and payeth yearly ------- Rent 2
pounds.[note in margin]: Lives Margaret Latham , Anne Dode her daughter.

[22] William Grafton houldeth of the sayd Sir Richard one messuage by lease ,
adjoyning to the aforesayd messuage upon the Est part, and to the lands of the
aforsayd Sir Richard called the Swan howse upon the North part, and to the High
Town upon the West part, and to the Hospell Street upon the Southe and payeth
yearly -------- Rent 6 pounds.[note in margin]: Lives Cisley his wife, Roger
and Anne sonne and daughter to the sayd William. Not to part with any of his
wholle estate except to wife or children without consent.
